Tom Catmull
This tune was a love song for the wife, written before the vows were made. The "stepcat" was her beloved sambones, a bit of a legend in Catmull/Zatzke folklore. The bar where the "3rd rounds come for free" was Jays upstairs. The "fiddle and the homegrown melody" were compliments of the Th' Spectacles, an acoustic duo of Larry Hirshberg and his then wife Grace(Decker).
VERSE
Ive got a little bitty bank account that overdrawn
Ive got a 77 rusted out datsun on my lawn
and if it weren't for bad luck you know babe I would have none
I thank god for you but what do you do to keep holdin' on
and if it comes down to you am me and your yellow cat
I hope your little furry buddy comes to love me and all of that
ive got a brother out in california who's got step cats too
they look at her and him and her like it just can't be true
CHORUS
So, I'm ready to leave, if you want me to
I will pack it on up and go
If we were adam and eve, it would make more sense
cause it'd only be a one man show
Do you ever get tired of the same old jokes
and the same old corny lines
I'm ready to leave if you want
but I need you most all the time.
VERSE 2
I like to drink a cold one or three when the sun goes down
six strings and a fiddle and home grown melody in town
are the kind of things that keep me going when your way
If you won't give me tomorrow, well I will take you day by day
BRIDGE
there's a bar in town where the third rounds come for free
and some local hack on his way to Tennessee
tryin' to pound it out of a four chord melody
and on his way,..to Tennessee
VERSE 3
so tell me one more time if I sound like the men before
if its a passe cliche well I say you just show me the door(I think this
line is different on the disc)
but let me get this out straight once before I go
a better lovin' ain't comin' out of any other tall dark so and so
REPEAT CHORUS(lather, rinse, and so on)
